New survey reveals attitudes to fish farming in Scotland

The survey examined public attitudes towards the aquaculture industry in Scotland and found marked regional variations. Thirty eight per cent of Western Islanders questioned said that expansion would be better for Scotland, compared with an average of 23 per cent in other survey areas.

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth questioned over 700 residents from Argyll and Bute, Highland, Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles about their attitudes to the development of salmon farming in Scotland.

The survey also found that, across all five regions, people were more worried about potential marine pollution and the impact of farmed salmon on wild stocks than to the visual intrusion of salmon cages in the waters off the coast of Scotland.
