Meeting on aquaculture zones draws large crowd

PAINTER - A proposed state regulation to protect aquaculture on the Eastern Shore of Virginia drew a standing room only crowd to a mid-day meeting at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center Wednesday.

The informational meeting and public comment period led by Department of Environmental Quality staff was the start of a two-year process to determine the final shape of a regulation governing water quality standards in areas to be designated Shellfish Aquaculture Enhancement Zones.

The push for additional protection for local waters suited for aquaculture operations originated with Gov. Tim Kaine, who requested that ways be identified to encourage alternatives to the discharge of wastewater from treatment facilities here.
