Land Prices Jump As Aquaculture Thrives
VIET NAM - The price of river-bank land in southern Tra Vinh Province has jumped by three fold as catfish breeders buy rice fields and market gardens for aqua culture.Figures provided by the provincial Fisheries Department show that the price of river-bank land is between VND30-VND40 million per 1,000 sq.m compared with as little as VND15 million per 1,000 sq.m previously.
An example is the Can Tho Mekong Company.
It bought 14.5ha of market gardens in the Cau Ke District for between VND55 million to VND65 million per 1,000 sq.m to breed catfish by the third quarter of this year.
Another buyer was the Can Tho Cafatex Company.
It bought 17.5 ha of alluvial land in An Phu Tan Commune.
Cau Ke District Agriculture and Fisheries Division engineer Hua Thi Chuc says the two companies have used the land to build catfish ponds.
The Can Tho Cafatex Company has 500,000 tra, or catfish, to each 0.5 ha of water and says its fingerlings were thriving.
