Brunei Shrimps Attract Importers
Apart from the Chinese, importers from France and Italy have also made inquiries about Brunei's blue shrimp or also known as rostiris, said Nida A Santiago, Operations Manager of the Dua-O-Dua Sdn Bhd.
The Dua-O-Dua Sdn Bhd is one of the local private companies had put up a booth at the Brunei Trade and Commodity Pavilion at this year's expo.
Knowing the potential and contribution of fisheries to country's GDP, Santiago said Brunei hopes to penetrate the Chinese as the sultanate is the only country that has the blue shrimps as the Chinese market is familiar with the common white shrimps. With more than 30 hectares in Telisai catering to a4uaculture, there are 15 ponds set up for shrimp harvesting that can produce two to three metric tonnes per three-month cycle, said Santiago, adding aside from targeting the Chinese market, the company have already established export transactions with Taiwan for the past few years.
Initially the company's exported to Malaysia but the operations manager said the company will also be able provide business in the form of consultancy services in aquaculture farming practices to Chinese companies.
