BC To Revise Waste Rules For Fish Farms
31 October 2007CANADA - The provincial government is planning to change waste-control regulations for British Columbia’s salmon farms.
Bernie Taekema, a senior aquaculture biologist with the Ministry of Environment, said a technical committee is recommending five changes to the Finfish Aquaculture Waste Control Regulation, originally released in September 2002.
The waste-control regulations govern the discharge of waste from finfish sites. “We’re amending the regulations because we know that it was deficient in a number of areas when it was released,” said Taekema. Taekema said the amendments would develop standards for sites with hard ocean floors, harmonize provincial and federal regulations and update language and protocols.
The technical committee is comprised of the Ministry of Environment, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ministry of Agriculture and Lands.
According to its website, the ministry has hosted meetings in Nanaimo, Prince Rupert, Campbell River, Tofino, Alert Bay and Port McNeil.
