Gov’t gives green light to seafood material import
VIET NAM – Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai has agreed to the proposal by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) on importing seafood material for local processing, assigning the Ministry of Finance to set tax rates on the products.Document No 1626 signed by the Deputy Prime Minister stated that the state encourages seafood material import for local processing, as it can help generate more jobs and take full advantage of Vietnam’s seafood processing industry.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) will work out the tariff for seafood material import products with the Ministry of Finance (MOF). It will be submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration.
0% import tax proposed
In the document sent to the government in early September 2007, VASEP’s Chairman Tran Thien Hai expressed his concern about the imbalance in the development of material areas and processing workshops. Most seafood processing workshops are running at below designed capacity, some running at 30-50% of capacity only.
The mushrooming of processing workshops has led to the serious shortage of materials. VASEP has proposed the government allow importing seafood material in large quantities for domestic processing in order to activate existing processing workshops.
