LCO Tribal Fish Hatchery raises, stocks thousands of walleye in 2007
15 November 2007US - The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Fish Hatchery produced and stocked numerous walleye in local lakes this year, while water supply problems prevented the hatchery from raising young muskies this season.
The tribal hatchery is located off Jasek Road on the southwest side of the Chippewa Flowage, next to a small water body named Mud Lake.
According to Paul Christel, fisheries biologist for the LCO Conservation Department, the tribe stocked 2,295,000 walleye fry, 76,715 small walleye fingerlings averaging 32.8 mm. long and 18,704 extended-growth walleyes averaging 6 3/4 inches long.
“For extended growth walleye, this is the second best year LCO has ever had (2005 was the best, with 24,270),” Christel said. “However, we did not stock small fingerlings in 2005. “We did have a significant number of small fingerlings this year. It was another great year,” Christel added. “Fall shocking surveys showed that survival of the small fingerlings was decent, in some instances at least. Fry survival is always hit-and-miss, usually miss.
