Middle East investors keen on fish processing in ECER
15 November 2007MALAYSIA - Several Middle Eastern investors have been exploring investment possibilities in fish processing within the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) since the corridor’s launch in October, said Fisheries Development Board of Malaysia (FDBM).
An unnamed FDBM official said the investors were keen on possible investments in the fisheries park in Tok Bali that included fish processing activities such as fish crackers and nuggets. He said there also had been a number of enquiries from local investors.
“The development will achieve more integrated fishing activities which will give the communities here economies of scale,” he said in a statement yesterday.
He noted that the development also would enable bigger boats to dock at Tok Bali. The official said the government had so far spent RM50 million on the construction of the fisheries park with the third or last phase scheduled to start soon.
The main thrust of the development involves an integrated fisheries park in Tok Bali that consists of a 400-metre wharf, offshore fishing platform, industrial processing facilities and commercial, business and logistics support infrastructure.
Currently, the industry provides 5,616 full-time jobs for fisherman of whom 31% are bumiputeras.
