Familiarising Scientists with Aquaculture

INDIA - In an attempt to familiarise scientists of South-East Asian countries on aquaculture science and inland fisheries management for sustained growth of the sector, the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) is hosting a workshop.

The programme is geared to help participants carry out more research work for strengthening the sector in respective countries and ensure socio-economic development of the fishing community. Statistics reveal that a sizeable population in the region is largely dependent on the sector for a living.

Sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organisation, Rome, and Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA), the eight-day programme will take them through some critical areas like application of molecular genetics in aquaculture, theory of population genetics, genetic engineering and selective breeding.

They would be provided with hands-on training in commonly used techniques such as DNA sequencing, cloning, marker assisted selection etc.

Practical sessions would be organised in quantitative genetics, data analysis using software like GDA in order to enable the participants handle huge data generating from biological study.

Inaugurating the workshop, NACA director-general Sena de Silva emphasised on strengthening regional cooperation and incorporation of cutting edge technologies in aquaculture science for sustained development and improving the livelihood of fisher folks.
