Fish Habitat Project Will Aid Shellfish Farmers
28 November 2007AUSTRALIA - A new project that aims to improve fish habitat and coastal water quality kicks off tomorrow in an area from the Manning to the Hawkesbury rivers.
‘Tide to Table’ is a joint program run by OceanWatch Australia in partnership with the NSW Department of Primary Industries, the Hawkesbury Nepean and Hunter Central Rivers Catchment Management Authorities, New South Wales Farmers Association and the NSW Food Authority.
It started as a pilot project in the Sydney area and has since spread to this new part of NSW as well as two other large areas of the Queensland coast.
Tide to Table gives fishers and oyster farmers the chance to do something practical on the ground to improve the habitat and water quality which fish and shellfish species need to survive and flourish.
The project is funded by the National Landcare Program (NLP), which traditionally spends most of its funding in agricultural areas in the west of the State.
NLP however recognises the importance of coastal rehabilitation for the fishing and aquaculture industries and so, in a first, is spending money on the NSW coast.
