Scotland gets lion's share of Euro millions

The European Fisheries Fund has granted £39 million in support to fishing and aquaculture. It aims to help the industries modernise and improve competitiveness.

Almost £12.5 million of the Scottish cash will be assigned to the north of Scotland. The money will initially go to the Scottish Government who are expected to invite applications for grants early next year, once priorities have been agreed.

Scotland is receiving 40 per cent of UK's the total fund allocation and Scottish Fisheries minister Richard Lochhead said he is delighted. "We have negotiated hard to achieve the lion’s share of the UK’s allocation of the European Fisheries Funds. The significance of Scotland’s fisheries and food industries, in both UK and European terms, is rightly recognised in this settlement,” he added.

News of this EU support has brought Scotland's fish industry some relief. Recent negotiations regarding north sea quotas have not proved that favourable for its white fish fleet.
