The fisheries school at Mossaka, will be sited on the banks of the mighty Congo river some 350 km (220 miles) upstream from the capital Brazzaville. It aims to reduce the country's 120 billion CFA franc ($268 million) a year food imports bill by encouraging aquaculture and a more dynamic fisheries sector.
"By covering the fish farming sector, this project will have a considerable impact, and change the financial situation at the same time," said Pierre Michel Nguimbi, minister of technical and professional education.
Spanish firm Makiber has won a contract to develop the institute. The 10 billion CFA franc ($22.35 million) investment, is already underway and work has started to prepare the site for the installation of fish farming systems.
