Print This Page Japan fish imports continue sluggish, with lowest total volume in ten years
JAPAN - Japan's seafood imports continue sluggish in October, staying at two thirds of 2002. Japan's seafood imports in October totaled 251,630 tons, which was a drop of 13.5% from the same month of the previous year, according to the Finance Ministry's preliminary trade figures compiled by the Japan Fishery Product Trade Association.
In terms of value, imports aggregated Y142,265.59 million, down 6.9%.
Cumulative imports in the January-October period came to 2,393,429 tons, down 7.8% from a year ago, or worth Y1,340,508.54 million, down 2.9%.
Continued from September, the October import tonnage sustained the lowest level in 10 years.
This represented a decrease of 125,000 tons from October 2002 (or two thirds of that month), when 376,796 tons were imported.
Imports of shrimp in October were 23,119 tons, down 2.2%, worth Y23,381.37 million, down 3.6%.
Crab plunged 21.6% to 6,643 tons, mainly due to decreased shipments of snow and king crab from Russia.
In terms of value, however, imports showed an increase of 7.6% to Y5,972.15 million.
