PHILIPPINES - In a bid to boost the fishmeal sector, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recently agreed to enhance laboratory support services for fish canners in Zamboanga City. The project is expected to improve the income of those involved in fish canning and also generate more jobs, the DOST said.
The department said a protein digestion system equipment was recently acquired to augment the existing facilities at the DOST-Region 9 laboratory.
"The improved service will definitely benefit the fish processing sector in their effort to comply with the quality demands of the local and international markets," the DOST said.
A number of the fish processing plants in Zamboanga City generate a value-added by-product in the form of fishmeal, a thick powder obtained from cooking, drying and grinding raw or trash fish.
Fishmeal is a rich protein source and is used as an ingredient in feeds for the aquaculture, dairy, and poultry industries. It is graded based on its protein content.
Data from the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics show that the country imported 44,567 metric tons of fishmeal in 2004.
