Christmas seafood mayhem

AUSTRALIA - The great Aussie obsession for seafood at Christmas shows no sign of abating with a record six million prawns expected to be sold at Sydney Fish Market in the week before Christmas.

The mountain of prawns is enough to supply every man, woman and child in the city with 1½ of the tasty crustaceans each.

Sales predictions show our seasonal gorge on seafood has never been so big, with demand for crab, lobster and salmon expected to rocket in the next two days.

An army of 80,000 people will lay siege to the fish market as it prepares to stay open around the clock just to cope with the crowds.

The seemingly insatiable hunger for seafood is expected to continue, but sales of newfound favourites such as snapper are predicted to have a four-fold increase in demand.

Sales of farmed barramundi and blue swimmer crab are expected to double during the last-minute rush for seafood.

After months of careful planning fishmongers are preparing to do the same amount of business during the week leading up to Christmas as they would for the months of July and August.

The average $60 or $80 spend at the markets during the rest of the year will balloon to $200 to $300 this weekend.
