Training Centre Provides 411 Jobs for Fish-loving Samarnons

CATBALOGAN CITY - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Regional Fisheries Training Center (BFAR-RFTC) based in the Samar State University Mercedes Campus, provided some 411 jobs to Samarnons in 2007, says Ronnie Berida, Training Director of BFAR-RFTC.

Berida said that it had conducted some 66 trainings to benefit participants engaged in aquaculture including tilapia and bangus production, seaweeds and mudcrab culture, bangus deboning and newline products for mussels and other related livelihood activities.

BFAR RFTC has a selection of technical demonstration farms in Jiabong, SSU Campus in Catbalogan City and a mudcrab culture farm in Palompon, Leyte. It has also established new demo farms for an Integrated Provincial Freshwater Hatchery in San Jorge and Bangus fingerlings farm in Jiabong.

To optimise resources and share expertise, Berida said that his office has made connections and coordination with other agencies. These included the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office (DA-RFU)/National Agriculture and Fisheries Council (NAFC)/ Provincial Agriculture and Fishery Council (PAFC), Agriculture Training Institute (ATI) 08, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Samar, Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) Samar, Pasar Foundation, Coastal Care Inc.-N. Samar, Plan Philippines and Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC).

BFAR hopes more programs and projects will be funneled to Samar no that the province has landed Priority 2 of the Hunger Mitigation Program. BFAR says that it is in an excellent position to implement and share its expertise in fisheries and aquaculture — a traditional passion for the Samarnons.
