Mekong Delta On Target to Be Top Shrimp Producer
VIET NAM - Almost 5,000 ha of water surface is being used to raise green-pincered shrimps in the Mekong Delta - the industry has increased ten fold during the past five years.
Most of the ponds are located in provinces along the Tien and Hau rivers. Businesses such as An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Ben Tre and Can Tho, are trying to restructure their production structure so they can cope with annual flooding of the Mekong river.
Ben Tre province has 2,400 ha of green-pincered shrimp farms, while Dong Thap has 1,500 ha, An Giang, 600 ha and Can Tho, 400 ha. The local farmers usually raise green-pincered shrimp in combination with rice cultivation or in rotation with black shrimps.
The expansion of green-pincered shrimp farming is attributed to the stable supplies of breeding stocks. Their availability and improved husbandry and raising techniques, coupled with increasing consumer demand for the product, is fueling the expansion.
The Mekong delta is expected to become the Viet Nam's largest producer of green-pincered shrimps.
