New Fish Centres to Improve Quality and Revenue
22 January 2008MALAYSIA - Two new fish processing and accreditation centres are planned for the East Coast Economic Region (ECER). The investment will improve revenue capture and boost the earnings of fishermen in the area. Under the stewardship of Malaysia Fisheries Development Board (LKIM), the two centres, based at Kuala Besar in Kelantan and Kuala Besut in Terengganu, will focus on downstream fisheries activities, including processed and ready-for-table fish-based food products.
According to The Star LKIM will use the centres to monitor food processing methods, quality, standardisation, packaging, presentation and branding. This will open up new markets for Malaysia's fishing an aquaculture sectors both at home and abroad.
They centres will act as accreditation centres for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), halal and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certifications.
