Science Outwits Seasonality and Boosts Production Potential

The breakthrough is a major achievement in the field of aquaculture as scientists of CIFA have found a way of breaking the seasonality associated with this species breeding habits.

The achievement has the potential to revolutionise India's freshwater aquaculture sector, says CIFA in The Statesman.

Usually, farmers acquire fish eggs by October, but this breakthrough will enable them to accumulate the fingerlings (80-100mm) in their ponds by mid April and so capitalise on at least five more months of the growing period. The most suitable conditions for fast growth of fish is between April and October, so this new technological development, will be of huge benefit to farmers and entrepreneurs, said CIFA director Dr Sarangi.
