Foodservice Honours for BC's Salmon Industry

CANADA - British Columbia Salmon Farmers has received Special Recognition Award for their outstanding samples of farm-raised Atlantic salmon.

The award, presented during the BC FoodService Expo in Vancouver by Mark von Schellwitz, VP of Western Canada for the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association. Top chef John Bishop of Bishop's Restaurant also congratulated BC Salmon Farmers for the outstanding taste and quality of their sample of seared farm-raised Atlantic salmon, served with a green curry aioli, promoted during the show.

The BC Foodservice Expo is Western Canada's largest Hospitality Trade Show. It's designed to launch new products, to build new customer relationships and to strengthen existing ones. The event is one of the three food shows that the BCSFA attends annually across North America on behalf of it's members.

Positive

"We are extremely honored to receive this recognition from both the CRFA and Chef Bishop," said Valerie Krug, BCSFA stand organiser. "We always enjoy participating in food shows and the response we received was extremely positive. People try our samples, we answer any questions they may have, talk to them about our farm methods and they come away with a much better understanding of not only our product, but the opportunities salmon farming presents for people outside of urban centres," she added.

In 2006, farmed salmon sales generated $450 million in export sales, making it BC's largest agricultural export for several years in a row. The BC salmon farming industry's contribution to the economies of coastal communities is significant; with an economic output of over $800 million and total employment of over 6,000, according to a recent report from PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP.
