Palau Should Eye Fish Farming

PALAU - The Pacific Island of Palau should consider fish farming as a thriving business venture, writes Bernadette H. Carreon in Marianas Variety.

Reports from an interview with Dr. Ming-Je Tang, Vice President of the National Taiwan University suggest that the Islands' rich marine resources could found a high value fish farming industry.

Tang said that Palau can reserve a certain portion of its waters to cultivate one of its marine resources such as Napoleon Wrasse. The area has more square meters of water than it has land mass, and the country should take advantage of this opportunity. It could tap into aquaculture potential and capitalise on the growing global increase in farmed seafood.

Products could benefit domestic consumption, although cultivating an export trade could prove very lucrative. The business could also prevent widespread over fishing, he said.
