Scots' Industry Welcomes FSA 'Sustainable' Review

11 February 2008

SCOTLAND - Bertie Armstrong, Chief Executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, says sustainability needs to be part of food standards advice.

Responding to the Foods Standards Agency announcement to review of its advice on eating fish, he said that sustainability of fish stocks has been at the top of the Scottish fishing industry’s agenda for some time and FSA was right to include the issue within its policies.

"In Scotland, the industry is leading the way in the development of sustainable practices, which was most recently illustrated by our support for the ground breaking ‘Scottish conservation credits’ scheme," he added.

The SFF has been invited to participate in the FSA review. Mr Armstrong says the Federation is confident that it will recognise that its fishermen are harvesting Scottish seafood in a sustainable and sensible manner.
