Mussel Production on the Rise
AUSTRALIA - South Australia Seafoods could see its production of mussels rise to 1,000 tonnes this year.
According to reports in the Adelaide News, the company that settled in Port Lincoln three years ago is already producing 700 tonnes of mussels - making it is the largest mussel grower in South Australia.
Now the owner, Mark Andrews predicts it will expand to 1000 tonnes worth about A$2 million this year.
He told the Adelaide News that the industry is only scratching the surface as Australia's annual production of 5,000 tonnes is well below the potential demand of about 60,000 tonnes.
He said the New Zealand population of about three million people consumes 12,000 tonnes by comparison.
Mr Andrews was growing mussels for businessmen in New Zealand when he decided to begin his own farming operation - with the support of investors.
