Public Hearing on Majuro Lagoon Fisheries

MARSHAL ISLANDS - The Republic of the Marshall Islands Environmental Protection Authority (RMIEPA) invites interested stakeholders and public to a public hearing on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of a proposed aquaculture development in central Majuro Lagoon.

A proposal by Good Fortune Bay Fisheries aims to extend their current pilot scale fish farming operation in Majuro lagoon to a full scale production of 50,000 metric tons per annum over the next of 10 to 15 years, says Yokwe Online.
The proposed sites are lagoon flat areas in approximately 120 feet of water, west of Kalalin pass.

A draft EIA is available for viewing at RMIEPA’s Majuro Atoll office and GFB Fisheries and the RMIEPA are keen to hear any public comments on the assessment for inclusion in the final EIA.

Under the EIA regulation 1994, the RMIEPA has requested a public hearing on the EIA to present the proposed project and environmental impacts to stakeholders and the public.

The hearing will be held at 6.00pm on 11 March 2008, at the International Convention Center.
