Environmental Groups Object to Barramundi Farm Reopening Proposal
AUSTRALIA - Environmental and fishing groups have hit out at plans to re-open the former barramundi farm closed down by Marine Harvest in the Tiwi Land Council distrct of Northern Territory, Australia.
The closure followed two major fish escapes after king tides swampswamped the farm cages.
According to Growfish, Prue Barnard, the Australian Marine Conservation Society's spokespersonsaid the farm should never reopen.
"Sea caged aquaculture has a huge environmental impact and thus will have a long term socio and economic impact," she said.
"Unfortunately, those barramundi will breed with the native fish populations changing the genetic make up of those fish and their natural ability to navigate around our coasts and breed.
"There's a huge risk in the Northern Territory with cyclones and other extreme weather."
The Australian Marine Conservation Society together with the Amateur Fishermen's Association of the Northern Territory (AFANT) have objected to the proposed re-opening.
