Marine Harvest Canada publishes sea lice management plan
CANADA - In response to public concern over the impact of raised salmon on local wild populations, Marine Harvest Canada has issued a publication detailing its sea lice management plan for the Broughton Archipelago in British Columbia.
The British Columbia Salmon Farmers' Association (BCSFA) has highlighted that a key priority of salmon farmers, like all British Columbians, is the health and long-term viability of wild salmon stocks.
The BC Salmon Farmers Association, which works collaboratively with government, industry, First Nation groups, environmental and stewardship groups says its aim are to ensure the healthy co-existence between wild and farm-raised fish.
"Concerns have been raised about the potential for sea lice from salmon farms to contribute to the decline of salmon populations in British Columbia's Broughton Archipelago" said the group. "One of our members, Marine Harvest Canada is addressing this issue head on and sharing information about how they manage sea lice in the Broughton Archipelago".
