Landlocked Virginian Farm Has Sights Set On Salmon

US - Salmon production is what Blue Ridge Aquaculture wants to farm at is land-based unit in West Virginia.

The company currently ships 70,000 pounds of live tilapia every week from its farm in Martinsville, but according to an Associated Press report, the business wants to upgrade to produce salmon.

Owner Bill Martin recently bought a West Virginia fish farm that once produced arctic char. However he eventually wants to use the farm to raise salmon and steelhead trout in low-salinity water hundreds of miles from either species' natural habitat.

Martin says inland fish and seafood farms are the future. He says he hopes to expand into oysters, lobsters and more to feed Americans' growing demand for heart-healthy seafood.
