Tuna Producer Fined for Inadequate Safety Procedures

The SA Industrial Relations Court issued the fine as the penalty for an injury to a work experience student, says a report in Adelaide's Independent Weekly. The Year 11 student suffered broken and cut fingers in June 2005 after catching them in a rope while untying one of the company's boats from a floating tuna farm .

The court found that proper safety induction and supervision had not been employed after the student boarded the boat late.

SafeWork SA director Michele Patterson said the case highlighted the vulnerability of work experience students.
