Huge Fish Farm Rejected

According to local paper the Arran Banner, the planning meeting, for a proposed aquaculture site at Clauchlands in Lamlash Bay was highly charged.

Marine Harvest have requested planning permission for the site, but those opposed say it is too close to a recently announced no-take zone in the bay. If allowed this fish farm would have been one of Scotland’s largest.

The main opposition came from the Community of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST)and other local groups. An unresolved objection from Scottish Natural Heritage, which is a statutory consultee, remains.

A COAST spokesman it welcomed the democratic decision by the councillors.
We look forward to a secure future of the marine environment for future generations of islanders," he added.

The committee's refusal for the site means the matter will now go to the Crown Estate.

Arran councillor Margie Currie had favoured the application and said she was disappointed by the outcome.
