Davao Aquaculture Booms
PHILIPPINES - The Davao Region is ranked first in the country's aquaculture production. Growth rate hit 19 percent last year, which in volume terms was about 67,000 metric tonnes.
Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR XI) regional director George Campeon said this was far in excess of the 55,000 MT reached in 2006.
Overall yield in aquaculture production contributed some 35 percent to the country's total production of the fishery sector.
The growth is a result of more fish cages that have been established in the different parts of the region. The Island Garden City of Samal now has about 16 while Panabo City has 56 units.
Mr Campeon said growth in this sector had been much higher than expected. The average figure in other areas of the country which was between 10 percent to 14 percent.
Installation of more fish cages will continue this year, with eight units planned for in Pantukan, Compostela Valley, towards the later part of the year.
One unit would cost in the region of P350,000 and after five months of operation the operator could expect a 19 percent on return on investment.
