Sekunjalo buys Transnet's abalone farm
18 March 2008ZAMBIA - Transnet Limited and Premier Fishing, have agreed a deal to sell Marine Growers, Transnet’s abalone farm in Port Elizabeth. Sekunjalo will purchase the business adding to its portfolio of aquaculture interests.
Mr Mo Kajee, CEO of Sekunjalo Investments Limited said the acquisition was in line with the Group’s aquaculture strategy and meet the growing local and international demand.
“The capacity of the Group’s abalone farm in Gansbaai is in the process of being expanded to 150 tons per annum to meet international demand. The purchase of Marine Growers in the Ngqura precinct strengthens our position where we will have additional product to supply the market and also to improve our pipeline in the expansion of the Gansbaai farm,” he said in the Cape Business News.
Last year the total export production for SA was around 1 000 tons. Mr Kajee believes that the export capacity for SA abalone could be 3 000 to 5 000 tons per annum.
For Transnet, the sale marks another milestone as it completes its transformation. Over the last couple of years, Transnet, the state-owned enterprise, has transformed into a focused freight transport and logistics services provider with assets in ports, rail and pipelines to service its customers in the bulk and manufacturing sectors.
