Print This Page Vannamei Given the Go-ahead by May
INDIA - The farming of Vannamei, the cheapest variety of shrimp across the globe, is likely to begin in India this spring. Seafood producers have welcomed the news and say the granting of permission to farm the species is long overdue.
The government has been debating the idea of introducing Vannamei culture for the past two years. Some of its ministries, especially the agriculture ministry, have concerns about the new species and feel it could create problems for native species and so the established seafood farming community.
However, reports in the Business Standard suggest that the ministry has now agreed to give a go ahead to Vannamei and the commerce ministry is also strongly backing the long-pending demand of the shrimp exporters of the country.
The ministry of agriculture has accorded a green light to two pilot projects in Andhra Pradesh, which are doing well with Vannamei farming for the last two years.
