Fish prices Waves of uncertainty

UAE - Fish markets nationwide are being exposed to a new wave of price increases. The reason is the direct result of the high costs of fishing activities, which are usually added to the prices of fish.

The fact that many fishermen have quit fishing and taken up other jobs, seeking better incomes has also caused a marked retreat in the fishing products nationwide, says a report in The Gulf Today.

Experts say that such an increase in fish prices is also the result of expected atmospheric changes that would probably prohibit fishermen from fishing for some days.

Consumers nationwide complained that prices of some varieties of fish have increased by almost 33 per cent, especially the price of 'hamour' , which increased from Dhs30 to Dhs40 per kilogramme in the past couple of weeks. And in Abu Dhabi there have been reports that the price had escalated 100 per cent.

Consumers are urging for consumer protection bodies to curb any more increases to fish prices before the situation gets out of control.

However, fish traders argue that this is quite normal and that the prices of fish goes in line with costs of fish production.
