Print This Page Algae Causes Fish Kill At Buffalo Springs Lake
US - Management at Buffalo Springs Lake says algae is to blame for a large fish kill. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says naturally occurring golden algae produces a toxin that affects gill function in fish. The Texas Department of Health says the algae won't harm humans or other wildlife, but people should not collect dead or dying fish to eat.
Fish kills caused by the algae have been documented in Texas lakes since 1985. The folks at Buffalo Springs say the algae usually goes away as the lake gets warmer.
