Russia Increases Fish Catch
RUSSIA - The Russian fishing industry has seen an increase in its catch of 5.8 per cent in the first quarter of the year.
The fishery organisations have recorded a catch of 788,000 tonnes between January and March.
The exclusive economic zone of the Russian Federation, the catch was 696,000 tonnes - 18 per cent of the permissible catch and 56,000 tonnes more than last year.
The most significant catch was in the Far Eastern waters, which saw catches of pollack and herring in the Sea of Okhotsk at 489,000 tonnes and 151,000 tonnes respectively. In the northern waters the catch was 41,700 tonnes and in the Bal;tic, 8100 tonnes.
The official Russian Fisheries Committee, Goskomrybolovstve, said that the trade situation was satisfactory and the quality of the fish, generally good.
However, in the Caspian basin, the catches had been down because of the severe winds during January.
