New Directions for PEI's Provincial Ministers

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND - Three of PEI's cabinet ministers had their department portfolios shuffled and renamed yesterday during a swearing-in ceremony at Fanningbank. With some changes for the Aquaculture Department.

Community and Labour Development portfolio was taken from the former Development and Technology department and transformed into a new portfolio called Rural Development. Allan Campbell takes on this responsibility, making him minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development.

He said he was excited about the new direction for his department. “You look at rural communities in Prince Edward Island, one of the main economic drivers of rural PEI is fisheries and aquaculture. To have those two under one mandate, I think it’s terrific," he told rteh local Guardian newspaper.

Richard Brown is now minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. Formerly called Development and Technology, his department is now given the added responsibilities of post-secondary education and the P.E.I. Lending Agency.

Gerard Greenan has been given early childhood to add to his title, making him the new minister of Education and Early Childhood Development.

The Guardian reports that the changes were made to reflect priorities and the way programs and services are delivered to Islanders, said Premier Robert Ghiz. “We’re doing a bit of reorganization in government right now, setting our priorities for the future. These changes were a natural fit for where we wanted to really set the path forward," he added.
