Low Salmon Numbers May Forces Shutdown
09 April 2008US - Government regulators are pondering restrictions on salmon fishing in the Pacific Ocean. The measures would hit restaurants and West Coast fishers but may ultimately protect chinook populations. According to the USA Today, an unprecedented collapse in the number of chinook salmon from California's Sacramento River, is forcing the Pacific Fishery Management Council to come up with a strategy. It has proposed significant reductions in recreational and commercial salmon fishing for much of the West Coast but the question still remains as to how much control applied.
A complete shutdown for the season, which normally begins in March, has been mooted. Salmon fishers, many of whom support the restrictions, predict that businesses will suffer and consumers will see increased prices for the fish.
