Public Has Say on Gulf Plans

US - The Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council is meeting this week to discuss proposals that could change the shape of fisheries and aquaculture in the region.

Today, Thursday, those both for and against the latest management plans for the Gulf region will have their chance to air their views on the proposals.

The public testimony session which allows pre-booked representations will examine Exempted Fishing Permits (EFP, the final action on Reef Fish Amendment 30B and the Generic Aquaculture Amendment.

There will also be an open public comment period folowing the public testimonies.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council has been working an amendment to fishery management plans covering aquaculture operations in the Gulf for the last five years.

However, the proposals have met with some opposition from groupos such as Food and Water Watch and Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.

The council meeting is taking place this week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
