Anglers Catching Escaped Trout

11 April 2008

CANADA - Some of the hundreds of thousands of trout that escaped from their aquaculture cages off Coffin Island in Queens County Nova Scotia are now being caught by anglers.

However, according to reports in Nova Scotia News' on-line NovaNewsNow the director of Provincial Inland Fisheries Murray Hill does not expect the fish to reproduce and have an impact on the wild fish stocks, although there might be short term competition for food.

The fish escaped from Ocean Trout Farms Inc last autumn after the tropical storm Noel.

Mr Hill said that the species was brought to the Maritimes and farmed there for at least 110 years, but have not established a wild population.

He says they believe, but are not certain this is due to the acidity of the waters off the coast compared to the trout's home waters of the Pacific Ocean.
