Funds Raised for Salmon Conservation

23 April 2008

CANADA - About 200 people took part in the fourth annual benefit dinner for the Restigouche River Watershed Management Council held April 11 at the Campbellton Regional Memorial Civic Centre.

The dinner was accompanied by a silent auction sale of donated goods, many of them locally produced. In total, the evening raised the sum of $14,300.

"This money will allow us to put funds towards different projects," said Richard Firth, president of the Council, to La Voix du Restigouche. Some of these, he said, will be research projects.

David Leblanc, general director of the Council, said that he found it very positive that so many people from Quebec and New Brunswick joined to raise funds to protect the Atlantic Salmon. He noted that sport fishing in the Restigouche watershed employs about 400 people and brings in about $10 million annually.
