NEW ZEALAND - Kaipara Harbour will get a new oyster farm. Approval for a 76ha production site was granted as the business has been deemed to have little impact on the environment or commercial fishing.
Accrording to news site Stuff.co.nz, the successful application is one of three in New Zealand approved for aquaculture space by the Fisheries Ministry.
"I am now satisfied the proposed marine farm would not have an undue adverse effect on commercial fishing," says ministry aquaculture manager Dan Lees.
"The marine environment and the interests of existing users of the coastal marine area are very important."
Marine farming applicants must provide a comprehensive environmental impact assessment to satisfy the ministry that their proposed activity is sustainable.
