Aiming for Tilapia Top Spot

The premier quality fish will be produced in Perak using a unique tracing system that can differentiate its tilapia from others, says a report for the Star.com.

Trapia Malaysia Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Albert Altena said the system, developed by a Norwegian firm, GenoMar AS, would allow Trapia to check on the fish’s genetic patterns taken from tissue samples.

“These are traceable fish bred naturally for many years through research and development. If there is a problem with our fish such as illness, we can determine at what stage it occurred. We can then improvise our system and eradicate the problem for better quality tilapia in the future," he explained.

Trapia, short for Traceable Tilapia, had last year announced setting up tilapia farms in Tasik Temengor, Tasik Kenering and Sungai Dala. The company began trial breeding runs with the Fisheries Deparment at its test site in Temengor last year.
