Fisheries Task Force Flags-up 69 Projects

INDIA - A report by India's task force on inland fish production and developing aquaculture, has been handed over to Fisheries Minister S Sarma.

Task force chairman M N Kutty suggested the implementation of 69 projects in fresh water and brackishwater aquaculture.

According to the NewsIndPress, the recommendations included enhancement of inland fish production by bringing additional 10,000 hectare area of ponds and tanks under composite fish culture, 30,000 hectare area of paddy field under rice-fish culture, using 5000 hectare abandoned low saline area for suitable fish culture, promoting culture and fattening to increase crab production and farming high valued marine fish like tuna, groupers, snappers, sea breams and Asian sea bass.

The report also recommended establishing fish feed plants for different species of fishes. An Institute for aquaculture and inland fisheries should be established. six centres of excellence for reservoir fisheries, aquatic biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource utilization, integrated fish farming in Kerala, nutritional studies and seed production of major aquaculture species.
