Fewer Escapes Re-affirms Industry's Commitment

30 April 2008

NORWAY - Norwegian authorities says that the number of farmed fish escapes has fallen by at least 50 per cent in the past year.In 2007, 404,000 salmon and trout escaped, compared to 935,000 in 2006.

Fisheries minister, Helga Pedersen is delighted with progress and said the results were significant and due to the "concerted efforts" made by the fish farming sector to curb escapes.

She felt that the industry was taking this issue "most seriously," and being rewarded.

The number of escapes so far this year also shows a marked reduction compared with the same period in 2007. The total number of salmon along the Norwegian cost is estimated to be around 220 million individuals, whereas the number of trout is estimated to be around 25 million.
