PHILIPPINES - Centred on the theme "Manage our Ocean for Mankind's Survival", Philippine Month in the Ocean is currently being spearheaded by the country's Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR) nationwide.
On the local level, DENR-8 through the leadership of Regional Executive Director Alfredo S. Pascual has organised a series of activities with Barangay 88 of the Fisherman's Village, San Jose District, Tacloban City at the centre of celebrations. Among the events, DENR is conducting Training on Mangrove Management and Rehabilitation.
DENR's Coastal Marine Management Division is also sponsoring a number of games including a banca race between members of the Sangguniang Kabataan at the Fisherman's Village.
The Philippine Month in the Ocean is celebrated annually to create awareness of the water and the marine resources that are not only a source of food, but also the livelihood of the nation's fishermen.
