New Use for Disused Defense Department Site

The site, which was abandoned in 2002 has ben proposed for several uses in the past.

Now, capital venture group, Acadia Capital Corp (ACC) has disclosed plans to develop the property as the Gulf of Maine Aquaculture Business Park, hoping to attract up to 15 land-based commercial aquaculture businesses, according to the Ellsworth American.

The newspaper said that among the aquaculture businesses eager to make use of the site is Maine Halibut Farms of Holden.

Since 2002, the company has been raising halibut from eggs to a market size of 2 to 10 pounds as a tenant of the University of Maine's Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research in Franklin. The company sells the halibut it raises directly to upscale restaurants.

The Ellsworth American said that relocating Maine Halibut Farms from Franklin to Corea depended on building the seawater circulation system, which is expected to cost $800,000.
