Bid to Boost Fish Farming

19 May 2008

MALAYSIA - The Malaysian Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (MeCD)is to boost fish production and exports by backing more fish farmers. The ministry is to set aside RM3 million to support 10 fish farmers in their bid to increase production. The ministry aims to give similar support to up to 100 fish farmers according to the Malaysian national newsagency Bernama. Minister Datuk Noh Omar said that the support was to help the farmers together with the company Global Hi-Q Sdn Bhd, which produces marine based products for the domestic and foreign markets. "The selected entrepreneurs will rear about 20,000 kerapu fish in each pond provided by the company," the minister told Bernama "They can apply for guarantor-free loan as working capital for the project, which is expected to generate income of between RM3,000 and RM4,000 a month to each of the participants," he told reporters after opening the Global Hi-Q's bio-technology complex in Teluk Dalam Sunday. Local residents will be given priority to carry out the project.
