Southern Leyte to Convert Mangroves Area into Fish Pond
Though a 5.5 hectares mangroves area, 3.5 square meters will be converted into a fishpond while the remaining 2 hectares will be kept as a nursery and mangrove farm, Abad disclosed.
The fishpond project initiated by the provincial government is for aquaculture such as technology demonstration and will serve as a field study site for learners, Abad reported.
It will also provide additional food not only in the nearby barangays but throughout the province and can generate additional income to the province, she added.
In short, this will increase the productivity and profits of the province and producing organic and natural aquatic products while preserving and improving the marine eco-system.
In a related report, at least 30 families are squatting presently in the mentioned 5.5-hectare mangroves area and it was learned that they will be relocated by the provincial government.
The provincial government proposed to relocate these families in a 500-sq. meter lot at Upper Villa Jacinta, Macrohon and plans to build them a core shelter where they can start their lives through the assistance of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office here.
The provincial government, though, was not yet through in the transactions dealt between the lot owner of the relocation site which is worth around P300,000.00.
