China Target for New Brunswick Crab Industry
Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet recently played host last night to a group of Chinese seafood importers at a seafood dinner in Caraquet.
The three Chinese importers are in the province to meet with New Brunswick fish processors and exporters and assess the industry's capability to supply Asian market.
Minister Doucet said that the Chinese market held extensive opportunities.
According to the New Brunswick Business Journal, the department has been and continues to work hard to develop new markets and products for export to maximise New Brunswick's full potential in the fishing industry.
The visit follows two New Brunswick delegations to Asia's largest seafood show, the Chinese Fisheries and Seafood Expo, to meet with importers there and help forge new market potential.
"Having these Chinese seafood distributors visit our processing plants during the height of our snow crab season will give them a sense of the capabilities of our fishermen and processors," he said. "Processors and exporters have been asking our department to help them gather better market intelligence in order to adapt to the needs of new export markets," he told the Business Journal.
"This visit to our province offers that opportunity to learn first-hand what the Chinese consumer is looking for."
