Red Tide Closes Shellfish Harvesting
13 June 2008US - The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has banned the harvesting of shellfish except the sea scallop abductor muscle in an area around Boston Harbor because of Red Tide, Paralytic Shellfish Poison.
The area closed includes the waters and flats of Boston Harbor, Greater Boston Harbor and Lynn Harbor and the Saugus Pines River.
This now effectively closes all Designated Shellfish Growing Areas (DSGAs) from the Massachusetts/New Hampshire state border to the Bourne/Sandwich town line with the exception of the Plymouth/Kingston/Duxbury Bay complex.
Excluded from this closure is the Plymouth/Kingston/Duxbury Bay complex, which remain open to the harvesting of all shellfish. All previous bacterial closures in these areas remain in full force.
